THREE DAYS OF ACTION IN WELLINGTON IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE

Sunday 26th November – 7:00pm – Myers Hall, 80 Webb Street, Wellington.
"Butcher of Qana" In Wellington
Protest Visiting Israeli War Criminal
Lieutenant General (Ret) Moshe Ya'alon
Former Chief of Staff Israeli Defence Force 2002-2005

Lieutenant General Moshe Ya'alon, otherwise known as the "Butcher of Qana", is responsible for a number of human rights violations and war crimes, namely the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) deliberate shelling of the United Nations (UN) compound at Qana in southern Lebanon , on the 18th April 1996. Ya'alon was at this time a Major General and Head of Israeli Army Intelligence. Knowing that displaced civilians were sheltering at the compound, he planned, directed and authorised the attack which killed over a hundred villagers who had taken refuge in the UN compound and injured many others. Fijian soldiers assigned to the United Nations were also injured. Ya'alon is currently facing a civil suit in US Federal Court on charges stemming from his involvement in the Qana attack. He is touring New Zealand justifying the recent invasion and bombardment of Lebanon and Israel 's ongoing illegal occupation of Gaza Strip, West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Organised by Peace Action Wellington & Wellington Palestine Group

Tuesday 28th November – 11:30am – 1:30pm – US Embassy, Wellington
Vigil & Fast in Solidarity with the Palestinian People

Please join us for a lunchtime fast in solidarity with the people of Gaza who are being starved, isolated and bombed constantly. Gather for half an hour or longer outside the US Embassy (as Israel 's main backer) for accounts of what is happening in Gaza and the occupied territories, speakers, discussion, Palestinian poetry and music. A letter of protest will be presented to the US Ambassador. Fasting has a long tradition as part of active non-violent resistance, and is meant to indicate the commitment of the fasters, show willingness to commit for the cause and question those in power by the foregoing of something ordinary and necessary. In this case it is aimed to link us with the deprivation being suffered by the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank.
Organised by Wellington Palestine Group

Wednesday 29th November – 12:00 onwards – Bottom End of Cuba Mall
UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
Wellington Palestine Group Information Stall

On the 29th November 1947 the UN adopted Resolution 181 on the Partition of Palestine, which laid out the division of Palestine into two states, one Arab and one Jewish. The Partition Plan was accepted by the Jewish Agency but not by the Palestinians as they objected to the dissection, partition or segregation of their country or the giving of special or preferential rights to a minority. After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, most Palestinian people were expelled from their land to live, up until today, in refugee camps, in Palestine and around the Middle East. Since 1967 Israel has occupied all of historic Palestine and subjected the Palestinian Population to a brutal military occupation reminiscent of apartheid South Africa with the addition of expulsion and ongoing land settlement. The United Nations adopted this day as an International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in recognition of their inalienable right as a people to self determination.
Please feel free to come and help out at the stall during the day.

Make sure you have a good time if you protest. Smash some private property, spit on some cops, and take the day off work...oh, that wouldn't be a problem, would it?

Karlos, yeah, good to meet you too! I'll add you to our contact list.

The cops were wankers. Afterwards, a friend and i were followed by a dodgy guy in a suit who kept talking into his jacket. It was pretty freaky. But ya know, that sort of shit is purposely done to intimidate protesters.

We disrupted his speech and embarassed the guy. Mission accomplished.

However, what i want to know is how the fuck can the police stop us from using the megaphone? OUR freedom of speech needs to take a back seat for a war criminal to be heard i guess.

Hello

Having witnessed the speech by Moshe Ya'alon, I can tell you right now that he was neither interrupted nor embarrased - he found your noises rather amusing.

Its very easy for all you bleeding hearts out there to critizice israel, whilst living in the comfort and safety of new zealand . If you'd lived in a country where terrorism is an everyday reality, in a country surrounded by nations that want nothing more than your complete destruction, you'd appreciate that israel has to be a bully to survive.

I'd also like to remind you that israel is the only democracy in the middle east, or perhaps you think that living in a theocracy under sharia law is better?

In your responses please restrain yourselves from using the terms "nazi" and "war criminal" - people think using these terms gives power to their arguments, it is infact an unjust comparison since pretty much everything these days are compared to nazism.

Ashaya:

Yes, he found them AMUSING enough to get the police to stop us from using our megaphone. Yes, i'm sure his amusement drove him to doing that.

Yes, i appreciate the comfort of living in NZ. Where i do not have to face the horrific treatment Palestinians are subject to. Where i can own my own land, regardless of my ethnicity and religion. Where i have the freedom to seek medical care, education, food and water without having to go through hours of waiting at checkpoints. Where i can live with dignity. Where i can live without fear and terrorism that is legitimised before my eyes. It's the lives Palestinians are forced to lead that makes me appreciate my own life, and makes me appreciate their alienable right to resist their oppressors.

Need i also remind you Israel recognises itself as a Jewish state, so it logically cannot be be defined as a democratic state. The second-to-no-class citizens of Israel (Arab jews, and Israeli Palestinians) will testify to that, i'm sure. So will the many religious laws that are implemented.

You ought to be ashamed of going to see a man that has been tried and convicted of war crimes. If the Qana massacre where over a 100 men, women, and children who had taken refuge in UN headquarters were slaughtered does not constitute a war crime and a crime against humanity, then you need to re-thinking your morals.

Taking the persecution and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians for the past 60 years into consideration, i can't exactly see how the state of Israel differs from the third reich. Racist expansionist nationalism drove German policies in that period, much like Israel's. Both under the banner of 'protecting their people'- A master race/ethnicity. While the 'parasitic race' being the Palestinians needed to be rid of. The feared demographic problem Israel screams on about stems from this racist understanding. The parallels are shockingly there but don't have time to go into detail.

So in YOUR response, please restrain from sounding like a fascist sympathiser.

Hey

In Israel, there exists a nutty religious minority who beleive that the palestinian territories are part of a god given land ,and that only jews should live on it. But they are just that, a minority, who are rejected by the majority of israeli society.

Israel is hardly expansionist - Did you not notice either the withdrawal from gaza, as well as the more recent statements by ehud olmert saying that he is willing to concede most of the west bank to the palestinians?

Also, the idea for a Jewish State didn't stem from racial superiority, but from the need for the Jewish people to be a indepedent political enitity, instead of a persucuted minority as they had been in europe for 2000 years.

Yes, Israel protects its people, as any state does, but not out of the belief that they are a master race (I don't where the hell you got that from).

Hahaha. Sorry, but i had to laugh at your predictable response dripping of desperation. I was telling a friend last night, debating this conflict has gotten to the point where i am growing sick of the predictability of pro-Israelis, and their refusal to acknowledge HISTORICAL FACTS in their feeble efforts to defend Israeli state terrorism.

Those religious fanatics you speak of have been running your precious state since it's establishment in 1948. It's not solely religion that drives the policies, it's the politics of power, and the hand of Empire.

'Gaza withdrawal': a civil disengagement does not mean a military disengagement. All Israel did was remove 9000 civilians out of harms way because they had become a burden to protect. While it maintains control of airpspace, borders and the like. That's NOT a withdrawal. The whole plan was to get the civilians out to make Gaza an open prison, subject to bombing raids- which has been happening for months now.

So you admit, that Israel is a Jewish state premised on protecting the 'Jewish race' whether they believe they are the master race or not is irrelevant. The implications are the same. Therefore, any non-Jewish citizens will have to take a back seat and accept the inequalities that come from protecting the 'Jewish race'. If that means persecution, then so be it! Hey, guess what, the third reich was also premised on the same ideology of 'protection'- why do you think Hitler fooled so many Germans into believing in the necessity of war? Just have to replace Jews with the Arayns. That by definition is racism, and therefore about as undemocratic as you can get.

This is too easy.

thanks anti flag!

your response epitomised the ignorance about israel that i'm increasingly seeing.

Zionism is a secular movement, and all israeli governments to date have been run by a secular parties, so when you excrete comments such as "Those religious fanatics you speak of have been running your precious state since it's establishment in 1948", you only prove to me how little you know.

As a resident of Greys Avenue I can tell you that iut was me that got the megaphone stopped. By all means have a protest but please don't interrupt the lives of ordinary New Zealanders who understand well the conflict of the Middle East but don't believe we need to bring it into our own longes - especially when uneducated people are shouting things like "Victory to Hamas" at us.

As it happens I lived some time in the Middle East and have seen injustice on both sides of the spectrum there. I don't have a solution to it but know that shouting insults across the road isn't going to solve anything.

Resident of Greys Ave:

Thanks for infringing on our right of freedom of speech.

Thanks for infringing on our DUTY to show our contempt for a war crminal like Yaa'lon to be touring our country- a country that has up until now, had a reputation for respecting the laws of civilised nations.

Thanks for pissing on the suffering of Palestinians just so you can have a pleasant and quiet night.

As for Hamas, they're a legitimate organisation that was democratically elected and now represent the oppressed people of Palestine. So yes, we will wish them victory against those that occupy them. Yes, i will support the inalienable right- that international law recognises- of oppressed people to resist their oppressor. How does this make one uneducated? And majority of the people there were university educated-including me. Or in your eyes, to be educated, one would have to show lazy indifference right? In that case, i'm a highschool dropout.

I'm so fucken tired of hearing this pathetic argument of there being no solution and the whole "there's suffering on both sides". How DARE you even put the suffering of the Palestinians on the same platform as the Israelis? There is clearly a massive difference. Israel is an occupying nation that has devastated the lives of Palestinians and Lebanese for decades, all the while violating international law with utter impunity. Jesus!

Shall we all purposely complicate the conflict because we're too lazy to either care or get involved and avoid bringing justice to the oppressed people of the Middle East? Ok!

Hope you didn't have too much of an uncomfortable night, God forbid.

Hamas (Arabic: حركة حماس‎; acronym: Arabic: حركة المقاومة الاسلامية‎, or Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya or "Islamic Resistance Movement"; the Arabic acronym means "zeal") is a Palestinian Sunni Islamist organization that currently (since January 2006) forms the majority party of the Palestinian National Authority.

Created in 1987 by Shaikh Ahmed Yassin of the Gaza wing of the Muslim Brotherhood at the beginning of the First Intifada, Hamas is known outside the Palestinian territories chiefly for its suicide bombings and other attacks directed against Israeli civilians, as well as military and security forces targets. Hamas' charter (written in 1988 and still in effect) calls for the destruction of the State of Israel and its replacement with a Palestinian Islamic state in the area that is now Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. The charter states: "There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad."

Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Israel, and the United States, and is banned in Jordan. According to the US State Department, the group is funded by Iran, Palestinian expatriates, and private benefactors in Saudi Arabia and other Arab states. In a 2002 report, Human Rights Watch stated that Hamas' leaders "should be held accountable for the war crimes and crimes against humanity" that have been committed by its members.

Being the HOLY LAND I was not aware this was anything but a HOLY WAR (Jihad).

If you look at the facts they speak for them self.

Yes I am aware innocent people are hurt, but this happens on both sides.

On numerous occasions peace was offered to Arafat but even though he was offered more than he asked for he still turned it down.

This alone proves all the Palestinians want is the destruction of Israel and the Jewish people and not peace and co existence.

It is easy to take one side or the other but it takes a big man to look at the inadequacies of both sides and be objective.

Do you honestly believe if the Palestinians put down there weapons the Israelis would make life worse for them?

I believe if like Ireland if they got rid of there weapons and stopped the killing life would only get better for them.
